Eurail and Train Travel in Portugal

Portugal is a beautiful coastal country. Many people only stop to see Lisbon, but Porto and the Algarve are great places, and just outside of Lisbon is Sintra, another great place to visit.

Travel in Portugal is pretty easy, but getting to Lisbon can be difficult - Last time I travelled there, there was only one train between Madrid and Lisbon and that was a night train. Needless to say, it was packed with poeple and I spent most of the train ride standing cramed in the aisle of the train. The people at the train station in Lisbon didn't seem much help with any questions either. In fact, I started at one train station, was referred to another, then another, and then back to the same station I had started at only to be told the train I wanted was full.

Also, I noticed quite a bit of crime at the train station. Lots of hustling going on. There was one group of three guys who would split up and ask people in line for change, giving them a sob story that they just need a few more dollars to get their train ticket and travel home. Then, after 20 minutes or so they'd stop and pool the money together, and then split up again and go to different sections of the station doing the same thing. This went on for a good hour.

Anyhow - Portugal itself is a great place to travel, I really enjoyed myself. Just be on your guard as petty crime abounds, and you'll want to keep aware of your surroundings at all times.
