Antwerpen Centraal

Do you have a memory of a generic movie taking place at the turn of the century, a lot of steam going off as the train is about to leave and the hero kisses his girl one last time. Well ideally, that train station should have been the Antwerp Centraal. It is the most beautiful train station I have ever been to.

Done up in beautiful marble, with a marvelous main dome and a huge main window. There really is nothing quite like it. Unfortunately it is under construction until at least 2005. As you walk straight out, you get to the Meir, the main shopping area.

There are many restaurants and shops right outside the station. Inside the station there are standard ammenities like luggage lockers, as well as a left luggage counter, vending machines, and I think also a fast food place, although it was closed when I needed it around 11 pm. There is also a cool miniature of the train station in the main atrium.
